Describing Australian style as ‘easy and not too try hard’ it’s clear to see how Bless’ed are the Meek’s designer, Tarek Kourhani uses that aesthetic to create collections that capture Australia style with an edge. We talk to Kourhani about the creative process behind each collection and their plans of world domination.

Can you give us a brief rundown of how Bless’ed are the Meek got started and what the brands about?

Blessed are the Meek started in Melbourne in 2003. It moved to Sydney in 2008, that’s when I took over the design direction.

Can you give us a peek into your creative process? What goes on behind the scenes to bring a collection from concept to reality?

We design 7 Bless’ed collections per year and 4 BC collections – so that basically one capsule per month. It’s pretty manic! We start with a review of the delivery from the previous year and look at what worked and how we can improve. Then it’s a matter of pulling together mood boards, prints, fabrics and colours. There’s a strong creative phase and then there is a lot of refining and making sure the balance is right, the shapes are working and the garment is priced appropriately

If you could describe the label in 5 words, what would they be?

Who is the Bless’ed are the Meek woman?

The Bless’ed girl has a confident and individual approach to style. She has an innate ability to mix both casual and luxe elements to create a completely modern take on dressing. She loves pulling together a look that blends unique designer details and edgy shapes with relaxed and easy pieces to create an air of nonchalance. Her look is uncontrived and very Australian. She pulls together a refreshing take on international trends interpreted in an effortless and distinctly Bless’ed way.

How would you describe Australian street style?

It’s really difficult to say.  We have the glam girls but we also have the relaxed beachy girls.  The general Australian style is always quite summery.  And easy, not too try hard.

How would you describe the Australian Fashion Industry?

It’s very ruthless but if you have a strong look and are unique, its an amazing place to launch a brand.

What inspired this current collection?

The hidden temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Does Bless’ed are the Meek have a style muse? Who are the Bless’ed style heroes?

Super Model, Anja Rubik, her on duty and off duty look is so easy to understand and relatable. She’ll put a cheap H&M tee with a designer suede coat. She has her own personal style and isn’t afraid to mix it up.

What do you enjoy doing most when you’re not creating?

Going on holidays! But it’s a struggle finding the perfect time to go as fashion is non stop.

What is your current state of mind?

Designing Winter 2016 :/ it’s crazy to think I’m working on winter next year and we haven’t even gotten into winter 2015.

Where to next for Bless’ed are the Meek?

World domination! Haha! We are really focusing on the international market, we’re blowing up globally it’s amazing.
