MSGM — THE ITALIAN SENSATION BY MASSIMO GIORGETTI

JOURNAL-900-3H0L

Can you tell us how you got your start in fashion?
In the second year of accounting school, at the age of sixteen, I had already figured out it was the wrong school. The math books and banking were really a nightmare. I always waited impatiently for Saturday to arrive to go to the newsstand and buy all the newspapers and fashion magazines: Vogue, Vogue Man, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, etc. I wanted them all. And I read them all.

Then at the age of seventeen I was asked to make the male model for fittings and in a few months, I learned all the technical aspects of modeling, packaging, stitching, etc. Once I finished my exams, I started out as a sales man in a dear friend’s boutique. From sales in store, I did sales in showrooms and two years later, I was already facing problems and responsibilities of a product design department of a large company. There I had the good fortune to find a contractor who believed in me from the start, so much that at twenty-four years old, I was already responsible for two clothing lines. At that moment I realized that maybe this was going to be my future and in 2009, the adventure began.

Can you give us a peek into your creative process?
In my collections, I put all myself, my ideas, my sensations and my emotions. So I hope that this is the real signature of my collection. Another fundamental aspect of my creativity is the music. Music has always influenced my designs, starting from the inspiration of my brand name: the group MGMT. I like to think that my collections are a material interpretation of the sound: music for your eyes!

Who or what is your greatest source of fashion inspiration?
My major source of inspiration is music, I love to transcript the vibes and melodies in my clothes so they have that rock and soft sensation.

If you could describe the label in five words, what would they be?
Smart, dynamic, irreverent, colorful, ironic.

What kind of music do you listen to when you create?
Indie music.

Who are your style heroes?
Walter Albini, just for his intolerance to limitation.

Aside from yourself, whom do you design for?
When I design, I like thinking about people in general wearing my clothes, and I like thinking about them as an MSGM community.

The quality you admire in a man?
The truth, the beauty, the loyalty.

The quality you admire in a woman?
The same.

Your favourite colour?
Yellow

What is your greatest extravagance?
I don’t think I have any specific extravagance.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Pane, my sweet dog, is actually very important in my life.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
In September we opened in Milan our first mono-brand boutique and we showed the SS14 collection on a catwalk: for me it was a natural evolution for MSGM.

Regarding the future, all I want is that MSGM grows slowly but surely and that it keeps the cool look it has now. I don’t want it to lose any of its freshness, its sense of irony or its audacity for which it’s known and appreciated.

What is your present state of mind?
Happy and concentrated on the Spring Summer 2015 men’s fashion show.
